What is Dialysis?
Dialysis is a treatment that performs some of the functions that a healthy kidney would do. It is needed when your own kidneys can no longer take care of your body's needs.
When is Dialysis needed?
Most patients need dialysis by the time they lose 85 to 90 percent of their kidney function. This is also referred to as End-Stage Renal Disease, or ESRD. Medical doctors use lab tests to determine the degree of kidney impairment using a calculation called the glomerular filtration rate, or GFR.
